Well that's just it; which is part of the beauty and enjoyment of this game, you can be one thing today and something else tomorrow. It's often best to change to the environment you're playing in or to the team you're with.
You can always use things like the offical wiki to research what you're getting into and see if they have recomendations for the area. I'd suggest you also refer to the skills you intend to use to research break points (and in the case of Expertise, break points on skill cost - be sure to read the wiki regarding what is and isn't effected by Expertise).
You can refer to the PvX wiki for builds or build ideas (or you can create your own but I'm getting the new player vibe and you're looking to maximize/ optimize instead of experiment). Just realize that the build wiki isn't a be all/ end all choice and they are player submitted so some of them can be taken with a grain of salt.
Just don't limit yourself to a certain build or the experience becomes stale real quick.

Thanks for the advice Elk!
I just saved both builds to my template so I'll be switching them from time to time.

You could try a few different bows they all have advantages and disadvantages.
Vampiric gives you a straight extra 5 points of damage and a +5 heal to you each shot but it also continuously gives you -1 health so if you stop firing you have to swap it out.
Hornbows have a slower rate of fire but have a chance to do armour piercing.
Flatbows have the fastest rate of fire but a high arc of fire so you need skills like favourable winds to cut down the arc.

Sup and major runes are generally bad, the health loss is not worth the tiny bonus in damage or duration unless you are going to hit any important breakpoint like warriors sometimes get a major strenrth rune to meet 4 adren gain breakpoint of enraging charge.
I think you should just use minor runes, 14 marksmanshit, 9-13 exp if you are a barrage ranger depending on what secondary you are going to use and how many atts you invest in it, if at all.
Yuor build, generally just barrage without volley works fine with its 1 sec recharge and two other bow attacks you must have would be d-shot and savage shot. FV is good with barragers and everything else is fine tbh. You attack several foes at once so damage end up being ok too.
A most common barrager:
[build prof=r/rt box][barrage][distracting shot][savage shot][lightning reflexes][antidote signet][favorable winds][optional][optional][/build]
-That would be the most general version of barrage ranger, you have a lot of optionals as you can see that you can fill with all sorts of stuff. For example splinter weapon that would trigger multiple times because each arrow of barrage is like a separate attack resulting in huge damage although its better to have a hero or another player cast it, you can use a conjure but its generally a bad idea because you wont trigger orders and curses, you can bring a pet too, to soak some damage off your party because mobs chose to attack pets as a priority but you sac two skill slots just to have a pet sogo decide. last but not least the allmahty pve skills, ebsoh, sy!, dwarven stability, pain inverter, asuran scan ect. ect. make a good addition to the bar.
Actually, the barrage bar you should aim to have is:
[build prof=r/w box][barrage][distracting shot][savage shot][favorable wind][save yourselves!][ebon battle standard of honor][lightning reflexes][dwarven stability][/build]
Enjoy!

Crafters have decent bows, as do collectors. With a flatbow I'd consider Read the Wind as preparation. Otherwise, Short Bows have the same refire rate without the high arc.

I'd pick one up, yes, plus a flatbow and a recurve, when you get the chance.

I have 2 main sources for Bows of all kinds
1 keep killing a boss till he drops the green bow he carries
2 the Free Chests in Nightfall.
Along with random lucky drops gave me all I need.
Chkkr Thousandtail in factions dropped his zealous Flatbow its -10 armour when attacking but I used that till I found a couple of replacements.
He is easy to farm and I have a number of heroes equipped with his bow to prove it.
Later I got the seedborne flatbow from the Seed of suffering at the domain of fear in nightfall.
In Prophesies green flatbows are hard to find so a collector would be the easiest way.
If you like I am happy to pass my old zealous flatbow Chkkrs to you I have several to spare pm me in the game if you want the bows, free of course.
ditto the vampiric shortbow last week I had 28 but failing to sell them to players I dumped all but 2 at the merchants.
Still I can farm them any time, Stsou Swiftscale is an easy solo farm.

I'd go with Elswyths' by the way, at least for a general bow excluding the use of weapon swapping. If I was weaponswapping, I'll go with the following (in greens):
Elswyths' Recurve
Bolten's Recurve
-Shield Set- (probably get one in greens)
Ironwing Longbow
Oh, and to clear up any confusion you get Elswyths' by completing the elite mission Tombs of the Primeval Kings.

Crafter weapons are perfectly good and once you discover all the collectors locations and needs you can pretty much get any weapon crafted.
The Green items are all perfect in their stats and usually need a skill req of 9
The vast majority of max damage weapons you find and craft have a skill usage of 12.
Req levels below that can be found but are uncommon and downright rare for req less than 9
The weapons you find dropped by creatures and from chests can be modified Green weapons can not.
So if you do manage to get a recurve from a boss you cannot change bowstring.
You need to find the boss that drops what you want such bosses also have elite skills for your ranger which is a bonus.
